NBA Basketball Description and History - The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the USA's premier professional men's basketball league. It has 30 teams; 29 in the United States and one in Canada. The NBA is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues. The league was founded in New York City, on June 6, 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The league adopted the name National Basketball Association in the autumn 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball League. In 1995, the NBA expanded to Canada and to 29 teams. Today, the NBA has reached 30 franchises and continues to evolve as one of the premier sports leagues in the world. An increasing number of international players have moved directly from playing elsewhere in the world to starring in the NBA. The Boston Celtics have won the most championships, with 16 NBA Finals wins. The next most successful franchise is the Los Angeles Lakers, who have 14 overall NBA championships (9 in Los Angeles, 5 in Minneapolis). Following the Lakers are the Chicago Bulls with 6 NBA championships, all of them over an 8-year span during the 1990s. The San Antonio Spurs, who have won 4 NBA championships since 1999, are the defending champions. The current league organization divides the teams into two conferences. Each conference has three divisions, and each division has five teams.
